Tyrese has been using social media to get the word out, that he’d like to play John Stewart and now with the word out about two Green Lanterns being involved here is what he posted.
Interesting. Not only is that a fan depiction of Gibson as John Stewart, but it’s him paired alongside fan art of Chris Pine as Hal Jordan. Could recent rumors that say Pine negotiating to play Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman was, in fact, a smokescreen to block the fact that Warner Bros. wants him as Green Lantern, and that there will be more than one central Lantern ?
Gibson later sent this image out :
“The Oath has been taken” ??
While this pair of images are just examples of fan art, the fact that Gibson is so heavily teasing his involvement in the film just weeks before San Diego Comic-Con does offer support to rumors that his long-standing mission to play the character has paid off. Chris Pine has remained silent so far. Which might be a good thing. Marvel has fired people for less 😉
EW recently asked Gibson about the chances he’ll play Green Lantern, and he didn’t exactly deny his involvement.
“There are certain things I can’t speak on. But I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.”
It’s debatable if the actor is the perfect fit for the character, but few can argue that he has the physicality and big-budget experience to take on such a high-profile role, having appeared in multibillion-dollar franchises like the Fast & Furious and Transformers. Gibson also made this comment:
“Listen, these muscles are here and they’re ready to be used. There are lot of people, domestically and internationally, who’s got love with your boy. I’m coming into this thing with some fans and some box office receipts behind my name and I say that proudly and humbly. I just think I deserve a shot at suiting up and becoming the Green Lantern.”
In any case, a Hal Jordan-John Stewart team-up could be a smart way to bridge the gap between Ryan Reynolds’ take and the character’s future.
So can we look forward to seeing Gibson onstage at Hall H for Comic-Con International next month?
“You never know,” Tyrese said. “I might be there on the other side of an announcement. You never know.”
