Filming On Star Wars : Rogue One Has Begun

Star Wars films are coming faster than at any other point in franchise history. All eyes are now on the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens which is set for release this December. Beyond that the standalone anthology film Star Wars: Rogue One has apparently started principal photography.

According to Making Star Wars, filming is indeed underway. Sources say that star Felicity Jones has filmed her first scene.

Rogue One is directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards,  and centers around the heist of the plans for the original Death Star. The jungle moon Yavin 4 is said to play a key role in the events. That’s where the Rebels hunker down, and form a base of operations, and launch the attack on the Death Star in Episode IV: A New Hope.

One of the scenes specifically mentioned for Rogue One involves a landing in a lush, jungle environment. Aside from indications that this is an action heavy scene that involves Jones, there’s not much to tell.

Some of the set pieces and props from The Force Awakens—specifically landers, Star Destroyers, and various weapons—are also reportedly being re-purposed and modified for use in Rogue One.

Rogue One  promises to be very different from the rest of the saga in that while the previous cinematic installments all revolve around the Force and the Jedi, Rogue One centers on the “normal” people.

“It comes down to a group of individuals who don’t have magical powers that have to somehow bring hope to the galaxy,” Edwards said.

The story of Rogue One won’t be as black and white as other Star Wars films, Edwards explained, but will have shades of grey. The director said they’re going for a “real” approach to Star Wars.

Edwards and company also showed a piece of concept art for Rogue One on Star Wars Celebration, which featured a squadron of Rebel soldiers running through the rain, with an unfamiliar-looking ship behind them.

The story of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One was pitched by ILM chief creative officer John Knoll, who presented the idea to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Hart. They approached Edwards with the idea while he was still working on Godzilla. After Edwards read the pitch, he said, “I couldn’t sit in a cinema and know that someone else made this film.” So he signed on.

Working with Edwards on Rogue One are special effects supervisor Neil Corbould, production designers Neil Lamont and Doug Chiang and cinematographer Greig Fraser. Their credits include work on films like Black Hawk Down, Zero Dark Thirty, Saving Private Ryan, Edge of Tomorrow and the Harry Potter series.

We still have a ways to go to see Star Wars: Rogue One for ourselves, as it doesn’t come out until December 16, 2016. Until then we’ll just have to be content with Star Wars: The Force Awakens when that opens on December 18 of this year. But with filming underway, its quite possible that we could get a teaser trailer for the film in front of Episode VII ??

“It’s the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good,” director Gareth Edwards said at Star Wars Celebration.

John Knoll will be executive producing the film along with Simon Emanuel and Jason McGatlin . Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To are also going to produce with John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) attached to co-produce.

Rogue One Teaser and Plot Reveal 2015-04-20 11-37-03

So its a crappy cam video, but its all we got .

Star Wars: Rogue One will be a prequel to the original trilogy and will be about Rebels stealing plans to the Death Star.

Director Gareth Edwards stated that the film will take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and will be about a group of rebels banding together to steal plans for the Death Star. Those plans are what allowed Luke Skywalker to destroy the battle station in the original film. Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy and Kiri Hart also announced the formal name for the new standalone films: they will be called “anthology films.”

Rogue One won’t be a film about people with The Force or the Jedi in general, Edwards said. Instead “it comes down to a group of individuals who don’t have magical powers that have to somehow bring hope to the galaxy

Felicity Jones, whose casting has already been announced, will play a Rebel soldier involved in the mission. Edwards underscored that the film is aiming for realism, and that it’s a no-holds-barred war picture. “It’s the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It’s complicated, layered; a very rich scenario in which to set a movie.” 2015-04-20 11-39-09
