The BAFTA Nominations And My Predictions. ( Updated with Winners )

bafta-2-1600x900

This years BAFTA nominations were revealed today. And as per usual I will try to predict the winners based on nothing at all. Well, to be fair I do have the Golden Globes to go on.

So without further ado:

The 2016 BAFTA NOMINATIONS

Best Film
“Arrival” – Dan Levine, Shawn Levy, David Linde, Aaron Ryder
“I, Daniel Blake” – Rebecca O’Brien
“La La Land” – Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz, Marc Platt
“Manchester by the Sea” – Lauren Beck, Matt Damon, Chris Moore, Kimberly Steward, Kevin J. Walsh
“Moonlight” – Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Adele Romanski

Having seen none of the films yet, BSS predicts La La Land. Although any one of these films could take the top spot here from what I hear. I,Daniel Blake is the Palme D’or winner , and Moonlight just won best drama at the Golden Globes. This category is damn tough to call.

Director
“Arrival” – Denis Villeneuve
“I, Daniel Blake” – Ken Loach
“La La Land” – Damien Chazelle
“Manchester by the Sea” – Kenneth Lonergan
“Nocturnal Animals” – Tom Ford

Again I think its going to be La La Land director Damien Chazelle. But its no stretch to think that Ken Loach could take this one for I,Daniel Blake.

Original Screenplay

“Hell or High Water” – Taylor Sheridan
“I, Daniel Blake” – Paul Laverty
“La La Land” – Damien Chazelle
“Manchester by the Sea” – Kenneth Lonergan
“Moonlight” – Barry Jenkins

Again its I,Daniel Blake up against La La Land, but I think Damien Chazelle will take this one home.

Adapted Screenplay
“Arrival” – Eric Heisserer
“Hacksaw Ridge” – Robert Schenkkan, Andrew Knight
“Hidden Figures” – Theodore Melfi, Allison Schroeder
“Lion” – Luke Davies
“Nocturnal Animals” – Tom Ford

Tom Ford for Nocturnal Animals.

Leading Actor

Andrew Garfield – “Hacksaw Ridge”
Casey Affleck – “Manchester by the Sea”
Jake Gyllenhaal – “Nocturnal Animals”
Ryan Gosling – “La La Land”
Viggo Mortensen – “Captain Fantastic”

It’s between Casey and Ryan methinks. It’s gonna pave the way towards the Oscars , and I belive its Casey Affleck who will take it.

Leading Actress

Amy Adams – “Arrival”
Emily Blunt – “The Girl on the Train”
Emma Stone – “La La Land”
Meryl Streep – “Florence Foster Jenkins”
Natalie Portman – “Jackie”

The hometown girl Emily Blunt would be an easy pick , but Im still going with Emma Stone for La La Land.

Supporting Actor

Aaron Taylor-Johnson – “Nocturnal Animals”
Dev Patel – “Lion”
Hugh Grant – “Florence Foster Jenkins”
Jeff Bridges – “Hell or High Water”
Mahershala Ali – “Moonlight”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Nocturnal Animals. All the way.

Supporting Actress

Hayley Squires – “I, Daniel Blake”
Michelle Williams – “Manchester by the Sea”
Naomie Harris – “Moonlight”
Nicole Kidman – “Lion”
Viola Davis – “Fences”

Viola Davis for Fences. Aside for Kidman, I think anyone of these could take it, and it wouldn’t be an upset at all.

“Julieta” – Pedro Almodóvar
“Mustang” – Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Charles Gillibert

“Hail, Caesar!” – Jess Gonchor, Nancy Haigh

“Deepwater Horizon” – Mike Prestwood Smith, Dror Mohar, Wylie Stateman, David Wyman

So there you have it . Out of 24 categories I correctly predicted 13. Most noteworthy was the Best Film, Director and leading actor/actress categories. Im happy with that. Imagine if I had watched more of the films ?  I might have gotten less of them right 😉

  • I have now seen Arrival, and I LOVED it. When I wrote these predictions I didn’t give Arrival much attention, and the fact that it was not nominated for director made me think it was not a frontrunner. Now Im baffled that Denis was not nominated. Im not changing my predictions , but It would be nice to see Arrival get some awards love.
